Fent servir la fenomenologia com a mètode hermenèutic, Jad Hatem s'ha lliurat darrerament a fer palès el contingut filosòfic present en la literatura catalana, medieval i contemporània. Amb aquest propòsit ha estudiat la poesia religiosa de Ramon Llull (Sobreamor, 2011); el deler amorós en Curial i Güelfa (L'amour comme puissance et comme vérité, 2012); l'empremta del temps en els poetes actuals (El temps en la poesia catalana contemporània, 2013 —Premi Crítica Serra d'Or de Catalanística, 2014—); el sentit de l'existència en la novel•la de Joan Sales (Joan Sales et l'instant glorieux, 2015).

En aquest nou assaig Jad Hatem es proposa de fer veure com la poesia de dos grans autors catalans, Carles Duarte i Joan Vinyoli, malda per atansar el lector a l'ésser tothora problemàtic. Els dos poetes entenen la paraula com la realització d'un projecte vital: fer-se a si mateix, entenent el món. A fi d'aconseguir-ho, tots dos consideren que cada gest, per insignificant que sembli, ha de tenir «la intensitat de l'últim mot» que ens atansa al «cor del silenci»: una guspira de llum que ens apropa la mort.
